Do remittances dampen the effect of natural disasters on output growth volatility in developing countries?

This paper analyzes the impact of natural disasters on the output growth volatility. Using a large sample of developing countries and mobilizing a dynamic panel data framework, it uncovers a diminishing macroeconomic destabilizing consequence of natural disasters as remittance inflows rise. It appears that the effect of natural disasters disappears for a remittance ratio above 8% of GDP. However, remittances aggravate the destabilizing effects of natural disasters when they exceed 17% of GDP

The effect of remittances prior to an election

This paper focuses on the relationships between remittances, elections, and government consumption as a percentage of GDP. We combine data from the National Elections across Democracy and Autocracy (NELDA) dataset compiled and discussed in Hyde and Marinov (2012) and the World Development Indicators dataset. We focus on 70 young democracies in the developing world. The period under investigation is 1990-2010. The main objective of the paper is to assess whether remittances have an influence on the political manipulation, which may occur prior to an election, through in increase in the government consumption-to-GDP-ratio. It appears that remittances dampen the political business cycle (PBC). Furthermore, the PBC is reduced up to the point where it is fully cancelled out at a remittance threshold of 10.7 percent of GDP. Parametrization of 5f-5f Transition Probabilities Between Stark Levels of U 3+ in LiYF4

In order to simulate intensities of the 5f-5f transitions of U3+ in LiYF4, we applied the Judd-Ofelt theory. Because of the large crystal-field splitting of the J-multiplets in the actinides, a set of phenomenological intensity parameters Bλkq is introduced to describe the transition probabilities between the crystal-field sublevels of U3+. The intensities of the absorption transitions between the crystal field levels calculated and a set of six phenomenological intensity parameters give a rather good simulation of the experimental intensities, and the applicability of the Judd-Ofelt theory is discussed for the 5f→ 5f transitions of the actinides. From these values, the oscillator strengths between the excited states involved in the laser transition 4I11/2→4I9/2 are calculated and the corresponding radiative lifetime is compared to the experimental one. Moreover, a comparison between the actinide ion U3+ (5f3) and the lanthanide ions Nd3+ (4f3) and Er3+ (4f11) in LiYF4 is made
